Quickbooks & Google Checkout Integration | May 20th, 2008
As a web designer / programmer I am always trying to learn new things. Lately, I have been focused on Quickbooks integration with Google Checkout. I prefer Google Checkout for handling transactions because its secure, easy to use from a customers point of view, inexpensive in terms of credit card processing (free if you use adwords), and much more. Although Google Checkout does a great job of record keeping and storing sales receipts, it ends there in terms of accounting features. Google will probably come out with some sort of accounting software that will integrate seamlessly, but until then, I’ll run my accounting through Quickbooks and recommend my clients to do the same.

The Sandbox Effect | October 7th, 2007
Sandbox Effect (Wikipedia): “The Sandbox Effect is a theory used to explain certain behaviors observed with some Internet search engines. The Sandbox Effect is the theory that websites with newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership or nameserver changes are placed in a sandbox (holding area) in the indexes of Google until such time is deemed appropriate before a ranking can commence. [1] Webmasters have noticed that their site will only show for keywords that are not competitive. It appears this effect does not affect new pages unless the domain is in the sandbox.” Read the rest of this entry »

Optimize Your Website for Local Search | September 9th, 2007
Optimizing your website for local search is incredibly simply and can bring in a large amount of traffic to your website. Local search is much more valuable for some than others. For example, if you sell products online, and do not focus on a local market, local search will not bring in much business. On the other hand, if you are a service oriented business or sell high price, low volume merchandise to a local market, local search is right for you. Read the rest of this entry »

Google Gadget Design for Websites | August 20th, 2007
We have recently created a SEO search listing gadget that allows websites to show off their top ranking in Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. The gadget is aimed at other web developers in hopes that they will use it on their site. This post is a tutorial for setting up our Google Gadget on your site. I encourage the use of gadgets as well as developing them yourself, or by a professional, to help your site bring in some traffic. If you are a DIY’er, with little knowledge of JavaScript and HTML, I recommend you hire someone to design the gadget for you. We will be designing such gadgets for $525 starting in September. The Gadget below pertains to the organic search result for http://www.rascalnet.com (this site) and the corresponding query’s and rankings: Read the rest of this entry »

Resize Photo’s for Your Blog with Gimp | August 11th, 2007
This post is for those who post images to their website without much experience of editing photos and want to keep a clean look and feel to their website. One thing I do not like about digital camera’s is that the software they come with is usually very limited in terms of editing and cropping photos. Many times I have come across photo gallery’s and blogs where the pictures look out of place, or would simply look much better resized, or perhaps touched up a bit. Read the rest of this entry »
